Lot Essay

The lyre-scrolled and Egyptian palm-flowered bergeres, with reeded and urn-capped pillars, are designed in Messrs Gillow of London and Lancasters French/antique fashion; and would have accompanied fireside Grecian sofas, then considered essential for the comfortable Drawing Room Living Room during George IV's Regency.

The inscription would almost certainly indicate their commission by J.T. Coryton for Pentillie Castle, Cornwall, following its building in 1812 to the designs of William Wilkins (d.1839), author of The Antiquities of Magna Graecia, 1807 and famed amongst his contemporaries for his 'true taste'.
