Lot Essay

The Etruscan-black table's flower-wreathed tablet depicts a scene from Virgil's 'Aeneid'. Aeneas, the legendary founder of the Roman race, rides to the defence of the Latins and Trojans against the challenge of Turnus, who is checked by Jupiter's thunderbolts.
