A rare mottled red sandstone figure of Ganesha
India, Mathura, Kushan period, 3rd century
The four-armed deity carved in the round seated in 'Royal Ease' over a rectangular throne, reaching with his trunk for a bowl of sweets in his upper left hand, clad in a short dhoti and with a snake wrapped around his body and coiled around itself at his chest, further adorned with bracelets, armlets, and beaded necklaces tied at the back of his neck, his face with round eyes and flanked by his large ears
