Depicting Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, seated on a lotus flower rising from the sea, a transcendent Buddha above him accompanied by two acolytes with offerings

Lot Essay

This rare example of a Tibetan thangka is embroidered on a white silk ground that was probably a much earlier sacred prayer scarf. The style of embroidery suggested Tibetan workmanship rather than Chinese.
