Lot Essay

The present painting is a partial copy after the original by Van Dyck which depicts Battina Balbi seated full-length with her sons Giacomo Durazzo (1620-79) and Carlo Emanuele Durazzo (1622-74), in a private collection. According to Barnes (op. cit.), the present half-length copy is likely the 1721 version by Gio. Andrea delle Piane that the Invrea family accepted from Giacomo Filippo Durazzo II when he purchased the original.
