A Monumental Bronze Incense Burner
Meiji period (late 19th century)
Cast in sections and designed on the cover with a large eagle and monkeys among rocks, the body decorated with panels of an ascetic pulling a monk from turbulent waters beneath a waterfall while a young acolyte looks on, and on the opposite side with eagles attacking monkeys and a snake, the body fitted with large pine-bough handles and set on a columnar section above rocks and flowers with birds and panels of various landscapes and bird-and-flower scenes, all supported by six beast-mask feet resting on a base designed with a coiling dragon in clouds; wood stand
