Lot Essay

Antoine de Pluvinel's treatise 'Le Mange Royal - Le Instruction du Roy, en L'Excercice de Monter à Cheval' was originally published incomplete following his death in 1623. An expert Chevalier in the Court of King Louis XIII of France (1601-1643), the engraved plates by the Dutch artist Crispijn de Passe II (c. 1597-1670) explore the principles of training horses in the form of a dialogue between Pluvinel and the King. A second edition was published approximately two years later and was translated and re-issued many times.

A copy of the illustrated treatise by René Menou, favourite pupil of Pluvinel, was sold as Property of H.R.H. The Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, KG, KT, KP, Christie's King Street, 27 January 2006, lot 543.
