Gustavus Hamilton was primarily a miniaturist, but studied under Robert West in the drawing school in George's Lane before becoming a colourist for Samuel Dixon's basso rilievo prints of birds and flowers.
He contributed miniatures to the Society of Artists in Dublin from 1765 to 1773.
