Lot Essay

The sitter is Diogo Antonio Feijó (1784-1843), catholic priest and Brazilian politician (deputy and senator, then Minister of Justice and from 1835-37 Regent of the Empire). Dr Pablo Diener has suggested the portrait may have been produced from another portrait; in the 1820s, when Rugendas was in Brazil, Feijó was an important politician (active in Pernambuco) but not yet part of the State administration.

An unpublished Brazilian drawing by Rugendas.

We are grateful to Dr Pablo Diener for his help in preparing the present catalogue entry.
