In 1976 George Lucas hired Howard Chaykin, a respected graphic artist to design a poster to accompany the comic book series based on the Star Wars screenplay. The poster was distributed at science-fiction and comic book conventions in the six months prior to the film's release. Although it was produced by Twentieth Century Fox, it included no reference at all to the film.
