Carruades differs from the Grand Vin in that a higher proportion of Merlot is used (between 30 and 50 depending on the vintage). The wine is also only aged for 18 months; the majority in two year old barrels, but between 10 and 15 are new oak barrels. The name comes from the Carruades plateau, which is the name of a group of four plots adjacent to the Château's best vineyards. The wine was initially called "Moulin des Carruades" before the 1980's. Annual production is between 20,000 to 30,000 cases.
