The 80 hectare estate is located in the south of the Margaux commune and consists of four well-drained gravel croupes or outcrops with a high proportion of pebbles upon a subsoil of coarse sand and gravel, which encourages the development of a deep root system. The vineyards are planted with 53 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot makes up 42 while the remaining 5 is composed of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Planting density is high varying from 8,300 to 10,000 vines per hectare. The grapes are hand harvested, sorted, destemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats at about 28 to 30 degrees with regular pumping-over. The different grape varieties and plots are vinified separately. Following malolactic fermentation the wine is racked into oak barrels and aged for between 16 to 18 months. Racking takes place about every three months to separate the wine from its lees. Finally fining with egg white is carried out to clarify the wine before a final blending and then bottling at the château in June. Annual production is about 300,000 bottles and the second wine is called La Sirène de Giscours.

Château Giscours--Vintage 2000
Labarde (Margaux), 3me cru classé
Tasting Note: Probably the finest Giscours made since the 1975, this black/purple-coloured 2000 offers up terrific notes of camphor, creosote, blackberry, and cassis jam intermixed with notions of smoke and earth. Spicy, with low acidity, a big, rich, fleshy, full-bodied palate, outstanding texture, and a long, pure finish. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 146, April 2003.
