Jean-Michel Cazes became involved with the château in 1973 and a few years later appointed Daniel Llose as wine maker, who continues to make the wine today. The Cazes family also own Château Ormes-de-Pez and Villa Bel-Air. The vineyards cover approximately 100 hectares (95 hectares are red grapes and 5 hectares are white) on a gravely outcrop overlooking the Gironde Estuary. The top-soil of Garonne gravel lies above a subsoil of chalk, marl and clay/sand gravel which enables roots to penetrate to a depth of between 6 to 8 meters. The majority of the vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon at 75 plus 15 Merlot, and 10 Cabernet Franc. The average age of vines is between 30 to 35 years and density of plantation is about 9,000 vines per hectare. Of the 5 hectares of white grapes, 45 are planted with Sauvignon Blanc, 40 Sémillon and 15 Muscadelle. The red grapes are hand harvested and lightly crushed and destemmed before fermentation in 35 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at temperatures of about 30 to 31 degrees with frequent pumping-over and pigeage. The wine is then aged in at least 50 new oak (normally medium toast) for about 15 months. As Stephen Brook wrote in The Complete Bordeaux, "The red Lynch-Bages is a much loved wine. And for good reason. It is richly fruity in an upfront style with no rough edges; it has great swagger, it's balanced, it's persuasive. It shows well when young, yet ages very well". The second wine is called Château Haut-Bages-Averous.

Château Lynch-Bages--Vintage 2000
Pauillac, 5me cru classé
Tasting Note: Good fruit but not the characteristic overt Cabernet Sauvignon aroma, though opening up almost like boiled sweets, candy fragrance; sweet, very attractive. Dry finish. No problems here. (*****) M.B.
