Since 1994 Antoine Ribeiro has managed the estate and Michel Rolland has been consulting since 1997. The 18 hectare property is planted with Merlot (85 and Cabernet Franc (15. The soils are mainly clay and gravel. Low yields are maintained with an average of 32 hectolitres, and in 2002 the yield was only 22 hectolitres. Harvesting is done as late as possible in order to ensure maximum ripeness levels, which is a characteristic of those châteaux advised by Michel Rolland. Fermentation takes place in a combination of steel and wooden vats with naturally occurring yeasts. The wine is matured in oak for between 15 to 18 months, and each vintage about half of the barrels are new. Annual production is approximately 120,000 bottles and the second wine is labeled Vieux Ch des Templiers.

Château Rouget--Vintage 2000
Pomerol
Tasting Note: The finest Rouget since the mid-sixties (i.e., 1964), this dense plum/ruby-coloured 2000 offers aromas and flavours of liquorice, balsam wood, plums, black cherry liqueur, and raspberries presented in a full-bodied, plump, chewy format. The flamboyant aromatics are followed by an equally impressive, lush attack, but serious tannin appears in the finish of this meaty, full-bodied Pomerol. With wines like this, it is time to rediscover Rouget. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 146, April 2003.
