The word "Cos" derives from Gascogne tongue, meaning "hill of pebbles". In 1917 the property was purchased by Fernand Ginestet, whose daughter Arlette married into the Prats family which is how the Château came into the hands of Bruno Prats who managed Cos d'Estournel until 1998 when it was sold to the Taillan Group. His son Jean-Guillaume stayed on as general manager. In 2000 the estate was bought by Michel Reybier, and since 2004 the technical director has been Dominique Arangoits. In July 2008 Michel Reybier has also purchased the famous Napa Valley winery Chateau Montelena, subject to regulatory approval. Cos d'Estournel is located in the south of the St-Estèphe appellation, on the border with Pauillac. The vineyards are superbly sited on a south-facing gravel ridge with a high clay content, just north of Lafite-Rothschild, separated by the La Jalle de Breuil tributary. The 64 hectares are planted with 58 Cabernet Sauvignon, 38 Merlot, 2 Petit Verdot and 2 Cabernet Franc. The average age of vine is 35 years at a density of 9,000 per hectare and only vines over 20 years of age end up in the Grand Vin. Yields are kept to about 40 to 45 hectolitres per hectare and harvesting is done by hand. The wine is fermented in stainless steel vats which were installed in 2004. Only the Merlot undergoes a pre-fermentation cold soak. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts. The different varieties are then blended together before being put into barriques. The oak barrels are sourced from the forest of Alliers and since 2000 the proportion of new oak can vary between 60 and 80 depending on the vintage. The wine is aged for about 18 months and remains on the lees without racking until July. The wine is then fined but not filtered before bottling. Annual production is approximately 360,000 bottles and the Second wine is Les Pagodes de Cos. As Stephen Brook writes in his book The Complete Bordeaux, "Cos d'Estournel is always a rich wine, with a more sumptuous character than the other top growths of St-Estèphe, that adds up to a very satisfying and sophisticated glass of wine". The following lots (1 to 571) are lying under bond at Octavian, Corsham. They are all of excellent appearance and are offered in original wooden cases or original cartons.
