This Pauillac property, is located immediately next to Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Pontet-Canet. No other Bordeaux château has undergone as many name changes. In 1956 it was known as Mouton d'Armailhacq before it was renamed, first as Mouton Baron Philippe in 1956, then as Mouton Baronne Philippe. Since 1989 its original identity has been restored and it is now known as Château d'Armailhac. Baron Philippe de Rothschild bought the estate in 1933 and it remains in the hands of his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. D'Armailhac has 50 hectares of vineyards which are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (57, Merlot (23, Cabernet Franc (18 and Petit Verdot (2. The average age of the vines is 47 years and the density is 8500 vines per hectare. The vineyard consists of three parcels: the plateau des Levantines et de' l Obélisque; the plateau de Pibran and the Croupe de Béhéré. The grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel for between 15 and 20 days and then matured in oak for between 15 to 16 months using a combination of new oak barrels (25 and second fill barrels from Mouton Rothschild. Annual production is approximately 220,000 bottles. The wine has improved significantly over the last few decades, gaining complexity, richness and fruit intensity and now represents one of Pauillac's cleverest buys.
