However since 1990 Les Forts de Latour has also been released en primeur. Les Forts de Latour is made from younger vines that are picked separately from the grapes for the Grand Vin, which uses vines that are over 25 years old. Grapes come from three main sources; from the vines that are less than 12 years old in the Grand Enclos; from grapes grown on three plots situated outside the Grand Enclos; and finally depending on the quality of the vintage, from certain vats of the Grand Vin that are not, after numerous tastings, up to the standards required. The proportions are normally 70 Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 Merlot but the exact proportion will vary slightly from year to year depending on the quantity of demoted Grand Vin. The wine is aged for 18 months in 50 new barrels and 50 in barrels that have been used for one vintage. Average annual production is 150,000 bottles.
