Patrick Maroteaux has overseen significant improvements, and hired Philippe Dhalluin to manage the property and make the wine until he left for Château Mouton-Rothschild in 2002 and was replaced by Jean-Dominique Videau. Yields are kept low by planting green cover, green harvesting and the age of the vines. The grapes are harvested by hand with sorting both in the vineyard and the winery. The vat room which was constructed in 1991 is designed to enable the wine to flow by gravity in order to minimize the use of pumps and maintain the natural aromas and freshness of the wine. Château Branaire-Ducru was the first Bordeaux property to successfully utilize the gravity-flow system. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for approximately three weeks. The wine is then matured in oak barrels, 50 of them new oak for about 18 months before being fined with egg whites and bottled. Approximate production is 240,000 bottles per year with the Second Wine made from younger vines and aged in older barrels labeled under the name "Château Duluc".

Château Branaire-Ducru--Vintage 2000
Saint-Julien, 4me cru classé
Tasting Note: A saturated purple colour offers up notes of graphite, plum, raspberry, and blueberry fruit in that distinctive Branaire style. Always a singular wine, even for St.-Julien, the wine boasts superb purity, rich, medium to full-bodied flavours, with loads of sweetness, some subtle toasty oak, and strength and richness that builds incrementally on the palate. A top-flight Branaire, this is the finest wine made at this property since the 1996 and 1982. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 146, April 2003.
