As pointed out by N. van der Kamp, Genesis: De Oergeschiedenis en de Verhalen van de Aartsvaders, in Het Oude Testament in de Schilderkunst van de Gouden Eeuw, 1991, p. 39, the story of Jacob, as recounted in Genesis, XXXI:3-5, was particularly popular among Dutch 17th century history painters. Through the experience of the 80-year war against Spain, the Dutch could identify themselves with Jacob in his trial with Laban.
