As pointed out by E. Buysen, Tussen Fantasie en Werkelijkheid, 1993, p. 158, the artist was with his contemporary Avercamp an early exponent of Dutch landscape painting, then characterized by low horizons and a strict horizontal ordering of the picture space. Idiosyncratic are the large plump figures in the foreground; these are typically ordinary countrymen, fishermen or sportsmen.
