Lot Essay

As pointed out by R. Trnek, Die Holländische Gemälde des 17. Jahrhunderts, in der Gemäldegalerie der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien, 1992, p. 283, the artist belonged to the so-called second generation of Italianate landscape painters. In contrast to the earlier generation -made up of Asselijn, Berchem and Both- Moucheron and his contemporaries preferred the ideal landscape, because of the influence of Claude.
