The château is located in the north of St-Emilion, very close to the border with Pomerol. The 26 hectares of vineyards are planted with 75 Merlot, 24 Cabernet Franc and 1 Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils are a mix of ancient sands and clay-sandy top soils on a crasse de fer (iron rich) subsoil. The planting density is 6,000 vines per hectare and the average age is 37 years old. The grapes are entirely hand-picked and sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in cement and stainless steel temperature-controlled vats. The wine is aged for between 12 to 18 months depending on the vintage in 50 new oak. Annual production varies between 80,000 and 100,000 bottles depending on the vintage. The second wine is called Petit Corbin-Despagne.

Château Grand-Corbin-Despagne--Vintage 2000
Saint-Emilion, grand cru classé
Tasting Note: The black/purple-coloured 2000 is a sleeper of the vintage. Revealing aromas of plum, wood smoke, iron, blackberries, liquorice, underbrush, and cassis, this full-bodied, layered, powerful, muscular St.-Emilion has some tannin to shed, but its finish reveals considerable persistence. It is a strong, virile, broodingly impressive effort. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 146, April 2003.
