Lot Essay

This is a classic "Transylvanian" rug, so-called because the majority of them appear to have been made in West Anatolia for the export market to central Europe. For a fuller discussion please see the introduction to a collection of twelve such rugs offered in these Rooms, 13 April 2000, pp.60-61. The present rug has a greater number of smaller flowerheads helping form the central medallion than most other examples. The closest comparable in design, but not colour, is illustrated by Ferenc Batári, Ottoman Turkish Carpets, Budapest, 1994, p.138, pl.48.
