Though Roman legions were long considered indomitable, the young Germanic leader Hermann and his tribal forces vanquished three throngs of these foes in the Battle of Teutoburger Forest (9 A.D.), a triumph considered to be a turning point in Rome's authority over Germany and the British Isles.
