Late 19th/20th century, impressed monogram and sceptre mark and cypher, incised 18½ - 15½, signed F. Schmidt.
Finely painted after G. Dou with a fishmongress and a young maiden standing in an archway, vegetables and a barrel of herring before them, identified and dated on the window ledge G. Douw 1651.

Gerard Dou, Dutch (1613 - 1675) was the son of a glass artist and first learned to engrave and paint in this medium. He later became a pupil of Rembrandt in 1628.
