Lot Essay

Dynasty XVIII canopic jars were usually surmounted by human heads and the protection formula also tended to become standardized during this period. The god Hapy, later represented with a baboon head, is the protector of lungs and is himself protected by Nephthys, the goddess of the East. For similar, cf. exhibition catalogue, Mummies and Magic, The Funerary Arts of Ancient Egypt, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1988, p. 149, no. 91. The title of the owner indicates a probable Theban provenance.
