Lot Essay

This is a rare example, outside of Egypt, from the tomb of the Tanite Pharaoh Psusennes I, son of the Theban high priest King Pinedjem I. Psusennes I's tomb was discovered at Tanis by Pierre Montet in 1940. Cf. J-F. Aubert, Statuettes Égyptiennes, Paris, 1974, pp. 136 and 153-154, pls 32 and 34, no. 76, where Aubert thought that only eight shabtis existed outside of Egypt with six in private collections and two in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and exhibition catalogue, Tanis, L'or des pharaons, Paris, 1987, p. 128, no. 12, for the type.
