A PAESTAN RED-FIGURE BELL KRATER, ATTRIBUTED TO THE ASTEAS PAINTER
CIRCA 360-350 B.C.
Side A: a theatrical scene with figure of nude Dionysos, chlamys with dot-stripe border draped around his left arm and right thigh, hair bound in a berried fillet, holding a thyrsos and phiale, following the figure of a phlyax actor, head thrown back, wearing mask, tights, red jerkin with phallus attached, and well padded short white tunic, holding torch and situla
Side B: two conversing youths, both wrapped in himations, one with dot-stripe border
Large palmettes under the handles, scrolling palmettes at the sides, band of wave pattern below, band of laurel under the rim, details in added red and white
14 in. (35.5 cm.) high

Acquired by the present owner's late father in Cologne, Germany.
