Signed Ateria, mid-19th century
the cannon 11½-inches long, marked 22 and signed ATERIA in various places, on turning stand with index arm pointing to engraved plate ADIATADO + 16-[0]-16 - ATRASADO tempo medio na meio dia the scales numbered by 4 divided by 2, latitude arc 0°-90° numbered by 10° divided by °, the lens on two shaped columns with brass fittings (slight scratch to lens), the marble base with eight columns supporting brass chain, bubble level (empty), covered card compass (the washer and bolt underneath missing), brass coat of arms above signed disc ATERIA Lisboa & Novas-Goa, on four screw feet.

Crowned cypher 'DF'; probably a gift to the Portuguese Prince Dom Fernando (1846-1861), the seventh son of Maria II (according to a signed letter of authenticity from Rainer Daehnhardt, Museu Luso-Alemão describing the instrument and sold with the lot).
