A fine brass lacquered Jones' Most Improved-type microscope
Dollond, early 19th century, with achromatic optical additions
signed on the foot Dollond [star] London, but some accessories clearly later: one eyepiece signed Huygenian Eye Piece NO.2. Carpenter & Westley, 24, Regent St. and a signed achromatic objective; the body-tube has a tapered nosepiece which screws into the end of a short arm atop the main limb, the stage on rack-and-pinion, sliding substage condenser and plano-concave mirror, tapering brass column terminating in a folding splayed tripod foot; accessories include a rotating objective disc with six lenses, lieberkuhns (one missing), stage spring, fish plate, an ivory holder for mica discs and brass rings; in fitted box with brass clasps (one missing) that shows signs of being refitted by Carptenter & Westley (two types of green felt present).
