Lot Essay
Pir Pahar is a hill near Monghyr on the Ganges, crowned with the ruins of a Mughal house. The Daniells visited the site twice, in October 1788 and in July 1790, staying on both occasions at Bhagalpur. William notes in his journal for the 28 October 1788 that 'Un[cle] made a View of the Cols House, the hill house or Pere Pharree in the Distance as far as the first Bastion of the fort, from which I continued it to the Water Gate.' Two watercolours, formerly in the P&O Collection (Christie's, 24 September 1996, lot nos. 17 and 18), show the same subject from other sides of the hill. Thomas also painted an oil of the subject in 1813 (see M. Shellim, Oil Paintings of India and the East by Thomas Daniell, R.A. (1749-1840) and William Daniell, R.A. (1769-1837), London, 1979, p. 82, no. TD86).
