Lot Essay

The Crucifixtion and Resurrection of Christ are presented side by side. On the left, Christ crucified is flanked by the Mother of God and John, and below the cross there is a small cave with the skull of Adam. On the right Christ is rising from the grave in an oval of glory while, in the foreground there are two terrified soldiers and another who is sleeping. An Angel seated on the tomb, two myrrh-bearing women and the buildings of Jerusalem in the background complete the picture.

From an early age, the new martyr George served under a Turkish officer as a groom. He was arrested and charged with being a Muslim who had changed his faith. After the Turks had tortured him in a vain effort to make him deny his faith, they hanged him in Ioannina on 17 January, 1838 at the age of thirty.
