Lot Essay

El Morocco, the first nightclub in New York City to use a velvet rope, was at the epicenter of nightlife in in the 1930s and 40s for such glamorous people as Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich, Jackie Kennedy, Dorris Duke, the notorious playboy Porfirio Rubirosa, Dolores del Rio, Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. It was famous for its exotic interior design, which included zebra-stripe seat coverings on all banquettes punctuated with white painted trees such as the pair illustrated here.
