Lot Essay

As was so often the case with the Maison Jansen, while 18th century period furniture served as their inspiration, they often adapted these pieces to suit mid-20th century tastes.

These commodes, with their clustered rocaille-inspired carvings in the center and corners, all on a black ground, were very likely inspired by the pair of Louis XV period corner cabinets attributed to Jean-David Fortunios and installed in the foyer of Pierre Delbée's iconic Paris apartment. They were sold, Christie's Monaco, 10 and 11 December 1999, lot 503.
