Lot Essay

Thomas Ovey was established as a hatter in Fleet Street in 1794, when he was listed in Kent's Directory, as well as in 1796, when he was called for jury service in a treason case. He received a patent for a new method of hat production in 1799. This hat appears to date between 1799 and 1813, by when Abraham Dee had taken over Ovey's business.
