Lot Essay

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Page-Roberts created a series of collages and a small number of oils inspired by Chichester Harbour. The present work is one of the few remaining oils of this period and demonstrates Page-Roberts' distinctive treatment of the human form and boat on a Quay. Stretched Figure by the Bow of a Boat can be read from left to right and suggests the cycle of a harbourman's work day from first light to moonlight and includes a boat within a boatyard.
The Shed, Chelsea Football Ground by Jim Page-Roberts sold in these rooms on 7 December 2006 for £33,600.
