Lot Essay

This is a preliminary portrait executed for Cuneo's painting of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, held in the Royal Collection.
Cunningham commanded a destroyer during the First World War and was Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet during the Second World War, being promoted to First Sea Lord in 1943. At the coronation he held the position of Lord High Steward, which was the first of the Great Officers of State. A bronze bust was unveiled by The Duke of Edinburgh in Trafalgar Square to commemorate him.
