An Arita blue and white silver-mounted ewer,
1660-1680, silver 1712-1715
Of ovoid shape with a tapering neck and short spout, decorated in the Chinese Transitional style with a continuous horizontal panel with two pairs of figures, one pair with a banner in a landscape with pavilion and a bird in flight, a band of alternating scrolling floral and geometric motifs along the shoulder, two stylized flowers on the neck, the loop handle with karakusa scroll, the silver mount engraved with an oval episcopal coat-of-arms, an episcopal headdress with ribbons and tassels flanking the oval, the thumb piece shaped as an embossed shell, foliate handle mount with incised characters 'MCM', (restored chip to rim and a kiln crack to the handle attachment)

Lot Essay

The master's mark 'FW' corresponds with Fredericus Wery, member of a family of silversmiths working in Maastricht. The year mark X within a rosette corresponds with the years 1712-1715.
