Comprising two gold examples of typical heart and crown design, one engraved and dated Eldest daughter to P MacDougall Esq for nursing E Sutherland, 1785; the other engraved with the initials I.F. and indistinct stamped, maker's initials, probably 18th century; and two of silver, one with engraved crown, both probably 19th century (4)

Heart shaped brooches were first recorded in Scotland around the early 16th century, the heart and crown design motifs were in the 18th century refered to as Luckenbooth as they could be purchased from the locked booths situated in the jewellery quarter of St. Giles, Edinburgh. The Luckenbooth brooches were used as traditional wedding gifts and often pinned to the shawl of the first born baby in order to ward off evil spirits.
