Lot Essay

Pryde was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Institute and in Paris. At Herkomer's School in Bushy he met the artist William Nicholson, who was later to become his brother-in-law. Together, under the name 'Beggarstaff Brothers', they produced highly original posters. His canvases have a theatrical quality, with buildings exaggerated in scale and cavernous interiors, deep in shadow.
