PENFOLDS BIN 60A 1962
The 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A is one of the greatest Australian wines ever made. In a world where egos readily clashed, the 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A Kalimna Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet unified wine critics and show judges. It is Penfolds most successful show wine, winning 19 trophies and 33 gold medals. A confluence of oenological, physical and philosophical achievement, 1962 Bin 60A was a cross-regional blend which exemplified the emerging Penfolds house wine style and highlighted the extraordinary synthesis of aromas and flavours derived from blending cabernet and shiraz.
...It's brilliant show career and sucess challenged the traditional views of the day and showed a way forward for both Penfolds and the fledgling modern Australian wine industry.
The fame of Bin 60A has reached all corners of the globe. Max Schubert's direct contemporary Andre Tchelistcheff (1901-1994), the founding father of the modern Californian wine industry, once asked a room of startled Napa Valley vignerons; 'Gentlemen you will all stand in the presence of this wine!' Australian winemakers generally acknowledge the wine as a modern classic of profound and enduring academic importance. The Rewards of Patience, 6th Ed. 2008R
Penfolds Bin 60A, Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, Kalimna Shiraz --Vintage 1962
South Australia
Levels: lot 355 into neck, lot 356 base of neck
Tasting note: Deep brick red. Lovely classical and ethereal Penfolds wine with beautiful cigar box/polished leather/sandalwood/apricot aromas with touches of herb garden. Remarkably buoyant, soft and supple wine with meaty/cedar wood/sweet fruit flavours and fine lacy/silky tannins. The finish is endless; almost without vanishing point. Utterly superb. Arguably the greatest Australian wine of the era. Penfolds The Rewards of Patience, 6th Ed. 2008.
