A KHORASSAN COPPER INLAID BRONZE BUCKET
BY ABU BAKR HARAWI, NORTH EAST IRAN, 12/13TH CENTURY
Of spherical form rising from short spreading foot, with triangular section rim and two raised lugs linking the curved handle, the body engraved and inlaid with a central band of finely drawn seated figures within copper-inlaid roundels which interlock with alternate minor roundels around which are engraved four harpies, a band above of engraved scrolling vine and copper-inlaid inscription broken by four bird roundels, the inscription in naskh but for one of the panels done in kufic which contains the signature, below the figural band and around the foot, a minor band of kufic inscription alternated with roundels, the lip similarly decorated, foot a later replacement from a contemporaneous bucket, small areas of damage and red surface patination

The inscriptions are:

On the rim, in kufic: bi'l-yumn wa al-bara/ka wa al-su[r]ur wa /al-sa'ada wa al-baqa' li-sahibihi (With Good fortune and Blessing and Joy and Happiness and Long-life to its owner).

Round the shoulder in cursive: al-'izz wa al-iqba/l wa al-dawla/[wa] al-baqa' li-sahibihi (Glory and Prosperity and Wealth and Long-life to its owner).

Signed in kufic as: 'The work of Abu Bakr al-Harawi'

Round the body in kufic: bi'l-yumn wa al-baraka wa al-ta/mma wa surur wa al-da/wala wa al-sa'ada wa .[wa al-r]aha wa al-rahma wa al-daw/ama wa al-tamma wa al-nasik[a] wa/al-nusra wa al-nasira wa a/l-'afiya wa al-kara[ma wa] wa al-baqa' da'im wa al-qudra li-sa[hibihi] (With Good fortune and Blessing and Plenitude and Joy and turn of Good-fortune Happiness and and Ease and (God's) Mercy and Endurance and Plenitude and Penitence and Victory and giving Victory and Health and Generosity and lasting Long-life and Power to its owner).

Round the base in kufic (in a cruder hand): al-baraka wa al-dawa[la]/wa tamma (sic.) wa al-dawala (?) wa al-baraka (Blessing and turn of Good-fortune and Plenitude and turn of Good-fortune and Blessing).
