Of rectangular form, with two cusped cartouches filled with carved bold naskh inscription, between them a calligraphic roundel, some damages to the extremities and wear to the edges

The main inscription reads: 'izz li-mawlana al-sultan al-zahir barquq a'azza allah nasrahu (Glory to our Lord, al- Sultan al-Zahir Barquq, may God glorify his victory).
In the roundel: al-sultan al-malik al-sultan/barquq 'azza nasrahu (The Sultan, the King, al-Sultan Barquq, may his victory be glorified).
Al-Malik al-Sultan Barquq al-Yalbughawi, Sayf al-Din had two reigns, 1382-1389 and 1390-1399 AD.

A number of wooden panels inscribed with the name and titles of Sultan Al-Malik al-Zahir Barquq, coming from the mosque he finished in 1386, are preserved in the Islamic Art Museum in Cairo (Jean David-Weill, Catalogue Général du Musée Arabe du Caire, bois à épigraphes depuis l'époque mamelouke II, Cairo, 1936, esp.nos.1622-1624, pls.IX and X). The calligraphy on the present lot is not quite as refined as those, and it is probable that it came from one of this monarch's less important foundations.
