Lot Essay

The quality of the carving on the design is rare to find in ceramic. It has more in common with Timurid stone carving such as is seen on the cenotaph offered as lot 150 in this sale. For further examples of similar work in stone please see Thomas W. Lenz and Glenn D. Lowry, Timur and the Princely Vision, exhibition catalogue, Los Angeles, 1989, fig.70, p.209, and no.89, pp.190 and 347).
