Lot Essay

The game of chess is believed to have originated in India, where it was known as chaturanga. The first literary references to the game come from the Mahabharata. The game is symbolic of the four units or divisions of ancient armies comprising elephants, horses, chariots and soldiers on foot. The Persians later created the more recognizable version of the game, shatranj.
