Lot Essay

It is noted on the final folio that this album was copied by the calligrapher, Hasan Reza Effendi, from an original by Kadi-asker Mustafa Izzet Effendi (d. 1876 AD), who in turn imitated an earlier copy by Hafiz Osman (d. 1698 AD), the calligraphy teacher of Sultan Mustafa II and Sultan Ahmed III.

Hassan Reza Effendi (1849-1920 AD) was born in Istanbul and studied calligraphy under the supervision of Yahya Hilmi Effendi (d. 1907 AD). He also studied with the famous Mehmed Shafik Bey (d. 1879 AD) and Kadi-asker Mustafa Izzet Effendi. There are 19 known Qur'an manuscripts and calligraphic panels by him in various collections including the Sabanci Museum in Istanbul (Sevket Rado, Turk Hattatlari (Turkish Calligraphers), Istanbul 1980, p. 250).
