The rectangular section pencase with rounded terminals, one hinged, each engraved with gilt scrolling floral panels, the slightly barrel-shaped truncated rectangular inkwell with hinged cover with small turning latch, the base and leading edges engraved with gilt scrolling floral designs, base and pencase both marked with the tughra of Mahmud II

Lot Essay

The signature found on this penbox is recorded on a penbox made in the reign of Sultan Mustafa IV (1808-9 AD). A similar but different mark of the same maker is recorded in the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, indicating that the present mark was probably an earlier mark which continued from the earlier reign into that of Sultan Mahmud II before it was replaced by the newer version (Garo Kürkman, Ottoman Silver Marks, Istanbul, 1996, p.108).
