Of rectangular form, the bole-red ground with a complex design of interlaced cloudband motifs outlined in black and highlighted in cobalt-blue and green, plain thin cobalt border, chips to edges and minor area of flaked glaze

Lot Essay

Tiles of this design, although with a turquoise ground, are found in the Suleymaniye Mosque (1550-1557) and in the tomb of Selim II (1574-1575). Further examples with an identical design on turquoise were sold in these Rooms (10 October 2000, lot 206; 1st May 2001, lot 364, and 27 April 2004, lot 340). An identical tile with a similar 'tomato' background was sold at Sotheby's, 12 October 2005, lot 157.
