Lot Essay
The George I pier-table top is mosaiced in bas-relief with an acanthus-flowered compartment wreathed by foliated ribbon-scrolls in the Louis Quatorze Roman manner popularised by the engraved Oeuvres (1712) of William III's Paris-trained architect Daniel Marot (d. 1752).
A similar top, with sunflowered center, featured on a table that was formerly in the collection of Colonel Norman Colville (offered Christie's, London, 14 June 2001, lot 68). Its shell-enriched frame, largely corresponds to that of a table formerly in the collection of Blanche Ewing (sold Christie's, London, 7 July 2000, lot 107). It also relates to that of a George I table commissioned for Erddig, Wrexham, Wales (R. Edwards and M. Jourdain, Georgian Cabinet-Makers, London, 1955, fig. 31).
