CIRCA 1750

This large architectural cabinet is very similar to one that was previously at Adare Manor, Co. Limerick and was probably made for Windham Quin (1717-1789) around the time of his marriage in 1748. Its Palladian triumphal-arch form is only relieved by the rococo cartouche on the pediment. The doors display richly-figured mahogany panels. The small drawers flanking a long drawer on the chest section is a common feature on Irish chests. A related Irish bureau-cabinet with quarter columns was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 2 February 1991, lot 228 (see The Knight of Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, pp. 121, fig. 164 and p. 254, cat. no. 200). The use of quarter columns on the lower section is traditionally associated with furniture from the north of England. The present lot has a Liverpool shipping label which suggests it was shipped to or from Ireland via Liverpool.
